1. Jack.

Daniel doesn’t remember that day very clearly, and it’s just as well. He wasn’t really Daniel, anyway, just a terrified blank slate in Daniel’s body. No one at the SGC dealt with it in any reasonable fashion, and Jack took it too far.

They had Daniel in an observation room, lying in a gurney and hooked up to a vitals monitor. He wasn’t actually sick in any way they could fix, but Janet Fraiser wanted him there just in case his condition changed to anything she recognized. He wasn’t restrained, but there were SFs stationed not outside but inside the room, just in case. And Daniel would never hurt Janet, but this empty shell was alternately frightened of or aggressive towards the strangers that came near him.

It only actually took a few hours for Oma to input Daniel’s personality and basic memories back into his skull from wherever they were in the ether, but it felt a lot longer. In the mean time, Daniel knew only his name and whatever else he was told about himself, most of which he chose not to believe.

Jack was trying to help. He really was. They all were. Daniel’s team sat in his room, trying to bring their friend back to his body. Sam had even drawn him a cheat sheet with the names of people who kept coming to talk to him. Jack took great offense to the description next to his own name: “Grouchy w/ Gray Hair.”

And part of it was that his best friend needed a menu to identify him, and part of it was that Janet had told them not to force Daniel’s memory so they were just sitting around Daniel while he poked his jiggling blue jello and glared at them. Sam and Teal’c probably knew from Jack’s face that he was going to go do something rash and stupid, but they didn’t stop him. Or maybe they were too focused on Daniel to pay Jack any attention.

Jack left the room with a brisk “Be right back,” which no one answered, and then he made a beeline for his own office. A lot of Daniel’s things had been boxed and stored in his closet; random collections of rocks, his journals, spare pair of glasses, and the item he was looking for.

Without thinking – of course without thinking – he snatched it and went back to Daniel’s bedside. Completely worthless thoughts flitted through his head – like where the hell had the camera that had taken this picture come from?

Yeah, that’s what he was thinking when he shoved a picture of the man’s dead wife under Daniel’s nose and expected a positive reaction.

It wasn’t immediate; it took a second for Daniel to focus on the image. It started with a sound so choked it was nearly animalistic and Jack didn’t even recognize that it was coming from Daniel, and then Daniel was out of the bed and bouncing off the SFs, ricocheting into Teal’c, absolutely freaking.

Sam and Janet got a hold of him – Daniel wasn’t fighting them he was just trying to get away. One of them had the sense to take the photo of Sha’re away from him before it got damaged, and Janet shoved it into Jack’s hands as she kicked him out of the room.

And that was why Daniel came back to himself surrounded by Teal’c and Carter, while Jack watched through the observation window with Jonas.

2. Sam.

She was 17. She wasn’t a virgin, and she knew how babies were made. There wasn’t any reason why she should have let Dylan keep going, when neither of them had any condoms. But it wasn’t so much letting as wanting, and then it was over and she was terrified.

Lori McDouglas went to the base store for Sam. Nobody would think twice if Lori bought a pregnancy test. She was the base slut, after all, and routinely bought condoms when she picked up her birth control prescription from the pharmacy. Her dad was a lowly Airman, after all, and his promiscuous daughter wasn’t sabotaging his career any more than his alcoholic wife.

No one took any extra notice of Lori, not like they would have about the daughter of an officer, a Major, Major Carter, of all people.

Sam watched Lori walking the aisles through the window, as she pretended to fumble with her bike lock outside the store. When Lori came out, carrying the ominous paper sac, Sam unlocked her bike and peddled in the opposite direction without looking at her.

They met up back at Sam’s. In the silence of the Carters’ quarters. Sam reimbursed Lori, expecting the other girl to leave. They weren’t friends, after all. Associating with Lori was almost as bad as actually being Lori. But the other girl didn’t go, she pointed Sam to the bathroom and muttered something about making sure she did it right.

It wasn’t hard. Sam knew how to follow directions and she was very, very good at taking tests. And she’d never been so glad in her life to fail this one.

When she came out of the bathroom, Lori read the results off Sam’s face.

“Good,” she said. “Idiot.” And then she reached into the crumpled paper bag and flung two things at Sam. The first was a pack of condoms that bounced off her shoulder. The second was a slim round disk shaped like a compact, which Sam caught.

“This is birth control,” Sam stuttered.

Lori rolled her eyes, already understanding. “It’s in my sister’s name,” she said. “Chill out, Major Carter.”

Lori and her family were transferred and moved away maybe a month later, and Sam’s secret prescription went with them. It only took Sam a few days before she straightened her shoulders and went to her own doctor. Then, she walked into the pharmacy herself, prescription – in her own name - in hand.

It was too far in her father’s eyes, and they had a huge fight about for the next two weeks, but Sam has never gone too far in that other way, the uncertain and afraid way, again.

3. Daniel

There were a lot of things Daniel wasn’t supposed to do as an Ascended being. He can’t remember all of them, but Oma thought a lot of things that any rational and ethical human being should want to do, were going too far.

One of those things Daniel can actually recall doing, although it’s very hard to describe. He was visiting his friends – something he also wasn’t supposed to do. Not talking to them, just watching. It was a weird kind of watching, though. He’d discovered that he could blend with humans. As an Ascended, he had no body, no limits, no boundaries. He could do more than listen and look; he could meld with other beings and experience…well, their being. He wasn’t just with SG-1, he was in SG-1.

He didn’t even do it on purpose. He just sort of leaned –metaphorically, of course – towards Sam, and suddenly he was in her. And it was weird. Weird and yet totally familiar, because it was Sam. And everything he associated with Sam – images, emotions, sounds, scents – was there. And he could hear her voice, not talking but speaking incoherent run-on sentences, like she was reading a book by James Joyce. And then he realized he was inside her mind hearing her thoughts.

It should have been weirder, but it was just Sam. Sam in a way he’d never seen, but still her, and he could feel her all over. And, dammit, he missed her, and it felt so good to be surrounded by everything that was her. He was settling in to stay a while, because this was awesome.

Which was when Oma showed up and, in her usual impolite way, yanked him out and away.

Apparently, Ascended beings weren’t supposed to merge with humans. It violated some kind of stupid Ascended rule, first of all, and Oma sent him a wave of disapproval and said that, in addition, it violated Sam.

And Daniel disagreed, but he didn’t do it again. He spent some time merging with other things and Oma didn’t object as long as it wasn’t humans. Daniel’s favorite was a brown tabby named Spot, a stray cat who got his meals in Jack’s backyard.

4.Cameron

When Cameron was nine, he misjudged the distance across the creek and went two and a half feet too far. It probably would have been worse if he’d underestimated the space, because then he’d have crashed into the creek bed, a 6-foot rocky fall. Instead, the front wheel struck the base of a tree, sending his bicycle twisting out from under him. Cameron flew over the handlebars and struck his chin on a branch of the same tree. His mouth filled with blood and he hardly even noticed when he came down hard to the ground and his left ankle cracked.

The neighborhood boys that had bet Cam five bucks he wouldn’t make it helped him get home. He couldn’t walk and his bike wheel was bent completely out of shape. They left him at the bottom of the path to his front door, though, none brave enough to bring him to the door. One kid ran up and hit the doorbell a couple of times before racing off.

So, Cameron was sitting on the sidewalk next to his crumpled bike, holding his bleeding mouth and realizing how much his ankle was throbbing, when his mother opened the door and started screaming. She ran towards him, screeching, and behind her Cameron saw his dad roll into view in the doorway. It was the weekend, and his father was taking a break from the prostheses, because the straps that attached them rubbed his skin painfully.

His mother got a neighbor – Mr. Jenkins – to carry Cameron into the house. There were 4 stairs to get into the house and the wheel chair wouldn’t go up or down them.

Cameron lost five permanent teeth that day and broke his first bone. His parents ripped into him for doing something so dangerous and stupid, and grounded him. In the next six weeks that he spent inside with a cast on, he more than once heard his mother grumble to his father an accusatory, worried: “He got this from you.”

And Cameron finally figured out what she meant when he flew his first plane, and felt the same rush of adrenaline that had filled him in the moments before he went too far. He still gets that feeling, and it has made every crash worth it.

5.Teal’c

Every Jaffa who ever looked at his or her Goa’uld master wanted freedom. As much as the humans do not believe it, Teal’c knows this is true. He was just the first one to pick people who were able to truly fight the Goa’uld. But when he went through the gate with the Tau’ri, because he believed that they could, it was too far.
No matter what, he will never again truly be able to go home
